A few years earlier, in 2013, I had participated in a collaborative art project developed by a St. John’s–based visual artist, Pam Hall. Pam has long been interested in the domestic, and this project, “Building a Village,” was no different. The premise of “Building a Village” was simple: Pam asked her participants to explore the question, What does home mean to you? Pam would send a house model—photocopied onto white cardstock—to any interested party to decorate as we saw fit. Then we’d return the finished houses to her, and she’d exhibit them as a collection, a village of tiny homes. Pam requested a dollar to cover the cost of postage, but other than that, we were on our own.

An enthusiastic if somewhat incompetent crafter, I signed up right away and waited for my house model to arrive, eager to get started. But once it arrived, the cardboard model languished on my desk as I tried to sort out how best to approach it. I overthought every step of the process. There were variables to consider. I had to think through authenticity, truth, representation, equity, justice, honesty. I had to ponder my pasts, my futures. I had to consider my artistic desires (and also, it must be said, my inevitable artistic limitations).
